My Blog

Welcome to ‘Krys Says This’!

Hello! I’m Krys O’Brien and welcome to my Blog!

At long last, after much deliberation and trepidation, and frankly a massive shortage of time, I’m here writing my very first Blog post! So….

Hello! Here we go!

But where to start…??

Writing it all down seems to be as good a place as any, with raw first thoughts, feelings and experiences spilling out into these pages.

This Blog is not about one particular specialised area of interest – I have been advised that I should concentrate on this, but life is so full of colour, textures and layers, it’s impossible to know just which one to choose! Indeed, this has been a massive stumbling block and a major cause of procrastination to actually getting started on it at all! So, after much deliberation, I’ve decided to just write! It’s therefore going to be a conglomeration of everything: a bit of a diary, I guess, about my life as an Actress, Voice Artist, Radio Presenter and Writer, from all of which I have received financial remuneration, and, as such, have enjoyed a professional life in all areas of what is classified as the ‘entertainment and creative industry’. It’s also about my Polish heritage, including World War II, my time in early ’80s Communist Poland, where I spent two years as a student at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and also in Warsaw, family, including our three adorable one-year-old pups, plus what it’s like to be a surgeon’s wife and a mum.

In a nutshell, and in Douglas Adams’ words, it’s about “life, the universe and everything”. To this end, I’m calling my Blog: ‘Krys Says This’, a handle I was given by the Content Editor of the East Grinstead Courier when I wrote my own column for the local paper, and for which I have been given full permission to use here. This gives me total flexibility and freedom to write about anything and everything, as it did for the paper.

So, without further ado, welcome to ‘Krys Says This’!

I've been acting professionally since I was 14. I completed my three-year drama school training, culminating in the Advanced Acting Diploma in Performing Arts, with Distinction. I'm an Equity, Bectu, Spotlight, and Actors Centre member. I've been Presenting on Radio since 2007: Meridian FM, Radio Redhill, Uckfield FM, Redstone FM, now 107.8 Radio Jackie and BBC Surrey and Sussex. I completed a Creative Writing course at the University of Sussex, during which time I wrote short stories and also embarked upon a massive project: writing a semi autobiographical novel, which to this day is on-going and composting, hence constantly changing shape and genre. I have written features for 'East Grinstead Living' and 'Sussex Life Magazines', and the local papers, including the East Grinstead Courier, where I had my own regular column: 'Krys Says This', plus a Food Review for the Times of Tunbridge Wells. I have also written radio adverts and radio plays. I studied Polish Philology at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, 1984-85 (under scholarship from the Polish Consulate in London), before embarking on my BA Hons (Lond) degree (Polish Studies) 1985-1989 at SSEES, University of London, during which time I was sent back to the Jagiellonian University in Krakow for a second year 1985-86 (at the time of the Cold War when Poland was still behind the Iron Curtain). I then worked for Macmillan Publishers (Academic and Professional) in London, 1989 - 1994.

I live in West Sussex, am married to Andrew since 1988, have two grown-up daughters, Anna and Helena, and three pups, Scamp, Storm and Blue.
